Magnetic Core Characteristics and Applications

Magnetic Core Characteristics and Applications Magnetic components have been used in several power electronic devices for decades. They are used in a wide range of applications. In order to implement the designed magnetic components, it is essential to have a good understanding of magnetic materials and associated technology. In the previous article, we learned about [...]

  • Magnetizing System for Permanent Magnets

Magnetizing

Magnetizing or Magnetization In magnetizing the magnetic domains inside of a magnet are aligned with the magnetizing field. If the magnetizing field strength is high enough, all the domains will be aligned and the magnet is said to be magnetized to saturation. Magnetizing to saturation is usually recommended as only then are the magnetic properties [...]

What Are Bonded Magnets Anyway?

What Are Bonded Magnets Anyway? • Bonded magnets are composites of a permanent magnetic powder(s) embedded in a non‐magnetic matrix. • The matrix is typically a thermoplastic or elastomeric binder. • Common processing techniques are extrusion, injection molding, compression bonding, and calendering. • Exhibit excellent mechanical properties compared to fully dense rare earth and ferrite magnets. • End product has good finish and dimensional tolerances requiring no finishing operations. • Injection molded magnets can be formed into complex shapes and be insert or over molded directly onto other components to produce assemblies. • The non‐magnetic binder lowers the density of the magnet and dilutes the contribution of the magnetic powder. • They generate less magnetic output per unit volume than fully dense magnets. • The two most common magnetic powders are isotropic NdFeB and hard ferrite. How to Choose Permanent Magnet Materials

How to Choose Permanent Magnet Materials Each permanent magnet material discussed above has its own pros and cons. How to choose the right one for your particular application is a challenge to any user. A balance between cost and performance must be considered in selecting of permanent magnet material. In Reference Information section of this [...]
