Silver (Ag)
Silver (Ag) Coating Magnets
Silver is belonging to the cathodal plating to the common metals. Silver is a malleable metal which has superior electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and weldability. Polished silver plating has preferable reflective and decorative nature; therefore, it can be utilized by reflector, tableware, musical instrument, and jewelry. As a good conductor, silver is broadly applied to instruments and electronic industries to reduce contact resistance between components or enhance weldability of metals. In addition, silver also possesses high chemical stability. Silver is very stable in alkaline solution or organic acid, but easily solution in nitric acid or hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Silver will soon discolour in the halide or sulfide contained air. Thus silver plating is generally processing anti-tarnish treatment to maintain appearance and reflective performance. For sintered Neodymium magnet, there are only zinc plating and nickel plating suitable to be directly deposited on its surface, thereby, silver plated Neodymium magnet generally has an underlying layer of Ni-Cu-Ni. Silver plated Neodymium magnet is typically served in decorative purpose and jewelry.

Understanding Silver Plating on Neodymium Magnets
To determine the nature and purpose of silver plating on magnets, one must first understand the material properties of neodymium magnets. Neodymium magnets are composed of neodymium-iron-boron, which is highly susceptible to oxidation and corrosion when exposed to oxygen or moisture. Consequently, these magnets require a protective coating to maintain their structural integrity and magnetic performance.
Silver plating is primarily utilized for its aesthetic appeal and functional properties, such as high electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity.[ Because silver cannot be deposited directly onto sintered neodymium magnets effectively, it is typically applied as a top layer over an underlying nickel-copper-nickel (Ni-Cu-Ni) base. This means that silver-plated neodymium magnets possess the same protective and structural characteristics as standard nickel-plated magnets, with the silver layer serving as a decorative or conductive finish.
The process involves applying a thin layer of silver, often around 12 microns in total thickness, which provides a shiny, reflective surface suitable for jewelry, cosmetic items, and electronic components where contact resistance needs to be minimized. However, users should be aware that silver is a relatively soft metal that can scratch easily and may tarnish when exposed to air containing sulfides or halides. Therefore, such magnets often undergo anti-tarnish treatments to preserve their appearance. While the silver layer offers good corrosion resistance, its primary role in consumer applications remains decorative, and it is generally not recommended for high-impact or heavy-duty industrial environments where the coating might wear away.
