Pulling force is for a perfect interface with a flat steel surface. Other objects and shapes will result in a decreased pulling force. Magnets will exert a force on each other from over 2 inches away.

The most frustrating aspect about neodymium magnets is their brittle nature, particularly when they collide with one another. Typically they will fracture on impact. To demonstrate this, two conventional neodymium magnets were allowed to attract (smash) into each other from about a foot away. The first image on the left shows the result.
