A new type of low energy magnetic semiconductor material

A new type of magnetic semiconductor material can reduce the energy required by computers in the data storage process. This research has broad application prospects in the development of energy-saving electronic equipment.

Research has found that a new type of magnetic semiconductor material may reduce the energy consumption of computers and other electronic devices. At this year’s National Sigma Conference, this study made physicists at South Dakota State University the focus of the conference.

Simon Gilbert tested the magnetic properties and structural properties of this new magnetic semiconductor material and found that it helps reduce the amount of energy required for computer hard drives in data storage. The material is an alloy of cobalt, iron, chromium and aluminum elements in which a portion of the aluminum element is replaced by silicon. Researchers are currently collaborating with the Nanomagnetic Research Group at the Nebraska Materials and Nanoscience Center.

The study earned Gilbert a recognition in the fields of physics, astronomy and engineering, and won the Sigma Conference Award for Excellence in Posters. In addition, he accepted the invitation of the prestigious International Society of Science and Engineering.

“Computers need to work at temperatures above room temperature,” Gilbert said. Because of the presence of aluminum, this new magnetic semiconductor material retains its magnetic properties at 450 degrees Fahrenheit (about 232 ° C). The researchers found that replacing a small portion of aluminum with silicon further increased the operating temperature to near 1000 degrees Fahrenheit (about 538 ° C). Both materials were developed in collaboration with researchers in Nedablas.

“This is a huge improvement,” Gilbert said. His research consultants are Professor Xu Wei and ParashuKharel, who is funded by the San Diego State University Excellence in Research Program and the Research and Scholarship Support Fund.

“When it comes to supercomputers, saving energy is a very important issue,” Gilbert added. Researchers at San Diego State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will continue to develop this potential material.

“I am very pleased that my research has received attention,” Gilbert said, and he himself will earn his bachelor’s degree this semester and then go to the institute to pursue a graduate degree.

“Research experience is one of the most valuable skills that undergraduates can gain in the early stages of their academic career,” Kharel said. “As long as they come to our lab, we will do our best to help them lay the foundation for the next step or study.”

Xu Wei pointed out that ensuring that undergraduates can conduct experiments is one of the advantages of the San Diego State University physics research project. “Westgate’s dedication in physical materials and nanoscience laboratories led him to a higher level of research.”
