Researchers at Purdue University have come up with an effective way to reduce the size and increase the efficiency of the medium- to low-power generators used in these applications.

There is a set of magnetic field windings (a set of insulated current-carrying coils) on the rotor of the wound rotor synchronous machine to generate a rotating magnetic field and adjust the output voltage. Associated with this winding are losses, which generate heat that must be removed from the spinning rotor. Permanent magnets can also be used to generate a magnetic field with much less loss and heat, but this method is less convenient for output voltage regulation.

“The Purdue parallel in-magnet setup is a hybrid solution that creates some permanent magnets and a winding magnetic field,” said Scott Sudhoff, the Michael and Katherine Birck Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Purdue’s College of Engineering. “This allows regulation, but with lower losses compared to conventional machines.” Magnets Generate Electricity

Omar Laldin, a former Sudhoff doctoral student who helped lead the Purdue team that invented the inner magnet device.
